The Meadow Of Glamour

A river runs diagonal along the Meadow. A large wood is on the north-east side of the river, and a swamp at the south-west side. The ford is in the middle of the river and the rest of the Meadow is flat ground. All terrain is Difficult, except the ford which is Easy.

The Meadow is also clouded in a shroud of Fog! Perfect for the ambush Selucess wants. The Bonvair win the initiative and get to go first.

Turn 1

With visibility poor in the grey mist, the Bonvair force stays where it is, waiting for the Tir to appear out of the mist and into their trap.

The Tir are slowed by the fog and slowly make their way to the sound of running water. Their orders are to track down the Bonvair raiders and to destroy them.

Turn 2

The fog lifts after only one turn (rolling a 6 on a 5+ chance), revealing the two armies to each other. The Peltae and Sword Mistresses decide to move towards the river and draw the enemy to them. Selucess and her Psiloi remain in ambush in the swamp.

Which the Tir look like walking into. The Fae and larger Tir Unit line up to cross the ford while the smaller Tir Unit covers them.

Only one Tir Archer Stand can see the Bonvair clearly, the others blocked by their own maidens. Even at distance their fire is accurate and push a Peltae Stand back twice.

Turn 3

The Peltae have to slow down to redress their line, also stopping the Sword Mistresses from moving far; unprotected from missiles, the Sword Mistresses don't want to be the target.

The Fae lead the Tir over the ford. Milladrid starts to get worried about the size of the enemy force. It looks a little small. With a delicate chant she casts Snare on the Peltae but fails to bind them to the ground.

The Tir shooting is less accurate and score no hits.

Turn 4

The Peltae stay where they are but the Sword Mistresses begin to move around. Selucess decides to wait until the Tir have crossed the river before springing her ambush.

The Fae deploy out of column in front of the Peltae while both Tir Units start to cross the river on either side. Milladrida again fails to lock the Peltae to the ground with her spell.

Bowfire drives one Stand of Sword Mistresses back twice.

Turn 5

Wanting to trap the Tir on the river the Peltae and Sword Mistresses charge into contact. Selucess gives her whistle and the Psiloi reveal themselves with a barrage of lead balls and arrows.

Milladrid moves her Unit over the river to face the new threat while the other Tir struggle through the running waters to help the Fae.

A hail of javelins kill a Stand of Sword Mistresses and drive another back taking themout of support for the Peltae in the deadly struggle in the middle of the Meadow.

Shot, arrows and javelins fly into and out of the swamp as young Bonvair girls leap out with enthusiasm under Selucess encouragement. Some of the juveniles recoil back under the fire but theirs is stronger and they slay a Stand of Javelineers! Milladrid rushes back into the river as the rest of the Unit is also pushed back, but not before she casts Nature's Distraction on the Peltae - who fail their chance to cancel it.

With humming birds fluttering in their faces and furry animals at their feet, and falling under the seductive charms of the fatale Fae the Peltae are forced back but don't take any losses, causing enough hits on the Fae to stop themselves from being overrun.

Turn 6

Hoping for the best the Sword Mistresses rush forward, splashing towards the Javelineers but can't get close enough. The Peltae remain locked in mortal combat with the Psiloi move to the edge of the swamp and continue their barrage.

Milladred and her Unit spread out and close in on the Psiloi as quickly as possible, uttering the same prayers to their Goddesses as the Sword Mistresses. Milladred casts Snare on them but fails again! The Psiloi will have the opportuity to run away.

The Javelineers fail to shoot down the Sword Mistresses, managing only to push them back once.

On the other side maidens are shot down on both sides. Two Stands of Psiloi are killed and so is another Javelineer - which routs them! The Tir damsels are suddenly overcome with fear and flee around their beloved Heroine Milladred who can't stop their panic.

In the centre the double ranked Peltae and the Fae remain struggling, neither side capable of getting an advantage that can be exploited.

Turn 7

The Sword Mistresses charge in, their rophilla's ready for action. Selucess reorganises the Psiloi who are unsettled at their own casualties but still eager to finish the job. They laugh and shout jeers ad Milladred runs to the Fae and the swirling melee their seeking cover from the captured Tir bows being used against her.

Milladred again distracts the Peltae, hoping that the Peltae will finally be slaughtered by the spirit Fae.

But the Tir are having no luck. Again the combats are indecisive. The Bonvair formations are too deep.

Turn 8

The Psiloi and their Heroine move out from the swamp heading to the flank of the Tir. The Sword Mistresses spread out so they can all get into the fray and hack the Tir down.

Locked in melee, none of the Tir Units can move.

Seeing the danger of the Psiloi, Milladred tries to Snare them, failing yet again!

The Sword Mistresses kill a Stand of Javelineers and the rest flee back across the river and hopefully out of harms way.

Turn 9

The Psiloi angle to get shots on the retreating Tir, as they fall back into the trees. The Sword Mistresses follow but can't keep up. Milladred and the Fae are now almost surrounded.

Javelins force the Sword Mistresses back but are in turn cut down by arrows from the Psiloi and Selucess, routing them. The Fae finally manage a break through, cutting down one Stand of Peltae, five hits to two and following up twice.

But it is not enough to turn the tide of the battle. With both Tir Units routed and the Fae soon be to attacked on all sides, the spirits vanish into the ether leaving Milladred to be captured by her hated foe.

Triumphantly Selucess binds the captive Tir and takes away her charms so she can't cast any spells. The Peltae, hard pressed and angry at the loss of friends just as the battle was won call for the captive to be sacrificed to the Goddess Aryiki, but Selucess calms them, she has plans of her own for the powerful Enchantress.

The Result

The ambush had its desired effect, Routing the largest Tir Unit despite taking near Rout casualties itself. If the Tir shooting had been more accurate against the unarmoured Psiloi, and the Sword Mistresses as well, both Bonvair Units would have been shot apart first. But that was not the case and because of the ineffective shooting and close combat between the Fae and Peltae - the Peltae always scoring four of five hits to break even or only get pushed back one Stand depth - the Bonvair were able to build up enough losses on the enemy to Rout and Break the army.

The Fog played no part in decided the battle. The river was more helpful to the Tir by slowing down the Sword Mistresses but the smaller Tir Unit couldn't cause enough hits.

Concerning Heroines, Selucess's inclusion allowed for the Psiloi to ambush and her bow attack never missed. Milladred didn't provide as much assistance, being unlucky with Snare; the Fae already made the Peltae easier to hit with Succubi so the addition of Nature's Distraction didn't increase the chance of hits by much. The Tir probably should  have had a combat oriented Heroine. One with a bow could have tipped the balance against the Psiloi, at least making both sides Units rout.
