Bonvair Heroines vs Medusa

When the Bonvair were forced from the western spur of the Tautha continent by their own Ayridannan tribeswomen they landed on a barren and rocky island just off the tip of the eastern spur, separated from the mainlaind by a narrows. On the other side of the narrows were the banshee, and most of the Bonvair maidens were sent to patrol and raid the enemy. However, despite the lack of living creatures on the island, a terror was at work; in the morning after the fogs had lifted lone maidens were found turned to stone. Recalling ancient stories the eldars of the tribe believed a monster was to blame of damsel and serpant appearance - even though the Hellenas were far away - and called upon five brave Heroines to root out the creature and destroy it.

This battle report only uses Heroines on a 1' x 1' Meadow of Glamour, which is Medusa's subterranean lair.

Medusa

Medusa has two compatriots in her violence against the Bonvair arrivals; Rattasha, a serpent Fae, and Circe, a powerful Magi. Their goal is to defeat the interlopers.

Medusa

  • Petrifying Gaze: A1. On a Hit target model is turned to Stone; treat as killed.

Rattasha

  • The serpent spirit has six arms. When duelling multiple Heroines, she can use her full allotment of Glamour against each opponent.

Circe

  • Acquisence: A1. On a Hit, target model must use its next movement to move as close to Circe as possible. In melee model suffers A-1 and D-1.
  • Blind: A1. On a Hit, target model moves in a random direction D6" in its next movement phase.

Bonvair Heroines

Five Heroines of the tribe have been called upon to destroy the monster and end its days of fear. The Heroine are:

  • Selucess (no bow)
  • Charlemane
  • Verilla
  • Rophilla
  • Phobila

All can perform the Downward Glance special rule.

  • Downward Glance: A model ignores the effects of Petrifying Gaze but suffers A 1/2 and D 1/2 rounded up.

Meadow of Glamour

The Meadow of Glamour is Medusa's subterrenean lair. It is 1' x 1' and there are six (6) Braziers. One (1) Brazier is in each corner of the lair and the other two at opposite corners of the centre area. They are marked on the lair as small black die.

  • Braziers: Models inside 2" of a Brazier can be seen from anywhere else in the lair and targeted in the Shooting Phase. A Model partially in the 2" zone benefits from D+2.

Because of the darkness models can only move 3" a turn and cannot be shot at from further away than 3" unless illuminated by a Brazier.

Movement for this battle does not use the Attacker/Defender initiative system. Instead each Heroine rolls a D6 and adds the result to their GLAM. Initiative order is done by this value; ties use a D6 roll-off to decide the highest. Or a model with a tied value can roll-off to move their ranking lower than another tied Heroine and one roll-off is required per ranking to be moved down. An example occurs in play.

Turn 1

Initiative: Medusa, Circe, Charlemane, Rattasha, Verilla, Phobila, Selucess, Rophilla

Circe and Medusa advance towards the centre of the lair on either side and stay out of the dancing flames of the braziers. As Charlemane advances forward she hears a strange rattle sound before out of the darkenss a towering serpent-damsel appears holding a gleaming blade in each of six hands. Rophilla rushes to Charlemane's aid. The other three Heroines fan out while remaining close enough to the duel to support if required.

However Verilla strayed into the light and before she can step back a long dark thuds into her bosom and makes her cry out. Two hits from Medusa's bow leave her with just one remaining. Circe

In the three-way duel Rattasha uses her GLAM to D-1 both her opponents. Charlemane has one more GLAM than Rophilla and in addition to both canceling one hit against themselves, adds an attack (A+1) to her own. Despite the surprise it is Rattasha who suffers and takes two Hits but remains in the combat.

Turn 2

Initiative: Charlemane, Circe, Rophilla, Phobila, Rattasha, Selucess, Medusa, Verilla

Verilla as quickly as she can draws away from the brazier. Circe too backs up, not wanting to get too close to the Bonvair Heroines, instead wantint to use her magicks to harm them. Phobila continues to swing towards the lair's wall whilst her friends watch or participate in the battle with the spirit.

Rattasha uses all her might and flashing blades to strike at just one of the Bonvair Heroines, Charlemane, and slays her. But she left herself open, knowingly, to the Rophilla who takes revenge and the multi-limbed monster is brought low.

Turn 3

Initiative: Medusa, Verilla, Rophilla, Phobila, Circe, Seculcess

Medusa slithers into melee with Phobila. Both Verilla and Rophilla move to help their comrade in battle against the monster they have been tasked to destroy. Circe, having forced her initiative ranking down uses the advantage to move closer whilst the Bonvair Heroines' sun-bronzed skin is lit by the flames of a brazier (Circe made two roll-offs, getting a higher result than Rophilla and Phobila to force herself to go after each one in turn). Seculess skirts the other side of the lair, unsure as she what she should be doing.

Circe casts a Acquiese on Rophilla and gets the one hit she needs. This will draw the Heroine away from Medusa turning another threesome into a one of one duel.

In the duel Medusa uses Petrifying Gaze on Phobila who respond with Downcast Eyes to avert being turned to stone. This reduces her ability to fight as she can't afford to look at the monster and takes a hit.

Turn 4

Initiative: Medusa, Rophilla, Selucess, Circe, Phobila, Verilla

Unable to control herslef, Rophilla walks in a trance towards Circe, who'se rouge smile cannot be denied. Selucess sees the danger but isn't close enough to help. Verilla, despite her wound engages Medusa with Phobila, together they might be able to bring the monster down.

Medusa uses Petrying Gaze again and both the Heroines avert their eyes. Medusa uses four GLAM to cause an automtic Hit on Phobila which will kill her and uses her A to fight Verilla. Verilla gives herself A+1 and cancels  hit. Phobila also increases her A+1 to increase her chances at defeating Medusa.

And working together the Bonvairs Heroines inflict one hit on Medusa but Phobila dies as Medus thrusts her dagger deep into the Bonvair Heroine's bowels.

Despite having Rophilla bewitched, Circe is unable to inflict any hits, suffers none in return, and is worried. Another Heroine is coming at her and she does not like to be close and personal with maidens at all.

Turn 5

Initiative: Circe, Rophilla, Medusa, Verilla

Selucess charges Circe from the side and with Rophilla they strip the sorceress of her dagger before stabbing her repeatedly until she falls slain having taken four hits.

Verilla decides to take her chance and use all her A in the duel against Medusa. But as soon as she lifts her gaze they lock with the monster's hydra weaving hair and she is lost and turned to stone.

Turn 6

Initiative: Medusa, Rophilla, Selucess

The last two Bonvair Heroines stay close to each other to provide mutual support and advance on the last of their enemies, Medusa, who is now alone but still confident. She has killed two Heroines by herself and only suffered a minor wound in return.

Turn 7

Initiatve: Selucess, Rophilla, Medusa

Getting the upper hand on the lone Medusa the Heroines charge the short distance befor she can slither away. Medusa Gazes on Selucess who calmy averts her gaze and defends letting Rophilla, the blood of Circe glistening on her adrenaline pumped body carry the assault.

Medusa tries to kill one Heroine outright, knowing that she can't split her attacks and defeat them together, she has to bring them down screaming one at a time. She starts with Rophilla, using GLAM to reduce the Heroine's D-1 and the last for A+1. Both the Heroines use GLAM to cancel one hit.

Snakes striking and poison dripping fangs bared Medusa is no match for the beautiful Heroines and is fatally wounded. She slips to the ground in a coiled heap leaving the two Heroines gasping for breath and holding each other for support. They have done their duty but at a terrible price.
